CFNEM Alpena Power Company Electric Education Fund

Each Fall, area K-12 educators are invited to submit innovative proposals to Alpena Power Company for $600.00 grants from the Alpena Power Company ELECTRIC EDUCATION FUND which is made possible through an annual $5,000.00 gift to the Community Foundation of Northeast Michigan from APC. The awards are aimed at strengthening electrical education in the classroom for area youth.

Specific activities that may be supported by the Alpena Power Company grant include active and direct student education beyond the established curriculum and designed to have a broad impact on all classroom participants. Projects often meet goals by educators who then impact other teachers, as well as their own students.

Although grades K-12 are identified as the primary focus, conditions may argue for extension of activities into undergraduate years. For example, involving college students as role models or advisors for younger students, or by continuing the provision of particular energy education opportunities to students as they make the transition to undergraduate studies.

Proposals may also encompass energy economics, conservation, safety, improved technical library material, student fairs and projects, and related awards for academic achievement. Proposal may focus on efforts to increase local support for continual updated energy education through better public awareness endeavors outlining needs of the schools. Unique methods of teaching basic electricity are also urged. Grant money is not to be used for salaries.

A major factor in the review of the proposals will be the credibility of the proposal as a method to bring about continual quality energy education.
